LATE REACTIVATION OF CHRONIC HEPATITIS C AFTER LONG TERM SUSTAINED RESPONSE TO INTERFERON THERAPY.

We proposed one year long recombinant alpha 2b Interferon therapy (from November 1989 to November 1990) to 50 patients with chronic active hepatitis (CAH), HCV correlate. The starting dose was 6 MU tiw for six months; we went on with 3 MU tiw for three months, then 1.5 MU tiw for three months. We also proposed one year long lymphoblastoid Interferon therapy (from June 1992 to June 1993) to 50 patients with the same disease. We used the same dosage. We regularly checked the patients: in both cases we had a 22 per cent of sustained response. Five years after the end of the recombinant alpha 2b Interferon therapy we had a 18,18 per cent of CAH reactivation in those patients who showed a sustained response. Almost three years after the end of the lymphoblastoid Interferon therapy we had a 27,27 per cent of CAH reactivation in those patients who showed a sustained response. In conclusion, three or more years after the end of a one year long Interferon therapy a percentage between 16 and 18% of patients shows a sustained response.
